Afternoon: Jumeirah, or somewhere with air conditioning
From November through March the weather is pleasant and the city is at its busiest, so an afternoon outdoors in Jumeirah works and is the nicer choice. Between June and September the heat is genuinely severe, and the honest plan is indoors — Downtown Dubai and the DIFC both take an afternoon without ever stepping outside.
This is the one city we cover where the season changes the shape of the day rather than just the comfort of it.
Dress, and what public means here
Public behaviour is more conservative than in Europe. Modest dress is expected in public areas and shopping malls, and there are no public displays of affection — hotels and beach clubs are more relaxed, but the default outside them is not.
It is worth saying plainly rather than discovering it: companions here know the norms well, and a booking is arranged with them in mind from the start.
Evening: dinner from eight
Evenings run late. Dinner starts from 8pm and restaurants stay busy well past eleven, so an early table is the unusual request rather than the safe one. Dress is smart.
Dubai Marina suits a longer, slower evening; the DIFC suits one built around a single good dinner.
Getting around, and Ramadan
The Metro runs until around midnight and later at weekends, but Dubai is built for cars — taxis are inexpensive and everywhere, which matters because the distances between districts are longer than they look. Two places that seem adjacent can be half an hour apart.
During Ramadan, eating and drinking in public during daylight is restricted and social life shifts to after sunset. Bookings work well; they just run to a different clock, and we plan around it.
