The warm, boyfriend-style experience — explained

A companion day in Berlin

5 min read

Berlin asks less of a plan than anywhere else we cover. Dinner is early by southern European standards and runs long, almost nothing expects formal dress, and at weekends the trains never stop — so the evening ends when you decide it does.

Afternoon: Prenzlauer Berg or Kreuzberg

Prenzlauer Berg is the gentler of the two and suits a long walk with somewhere to sit every few streets. Kreuzberg is busier and better if you would rather the afternoon had some noise in it.

Charlottenburg is the quieter alternative, and a first meeting in a familiar neighbourhood is often more comfortable than one in Mitte.

Dinner from seven, and it runs long

Evenings start earlier than in southern Europe — dinner around 7 to 9pm — but they also run much longer. A table booked at eight is not a table you need to leave by ten.

That length is the thing to plan for. Berlin evenings tend to expand, so it is worth not stacking anything behind dinner.

Easy company without pressure.

The one city where overdressing stands out

Berlin is the most relaxed city we cover on dress. Almost nowhere expects formal, and overdressing stands out more than underdressing — which is the opposite of the instinct most visitors arrive with.

A long walk, a beer garden, a gallery afternoon or a quiet dinner in a neighbourhood place: none of it needs to be formal to be good company.

Getting home, and when Berlin is busiest

The U-Bahn and S-Bahn run all night on Fridays and Saturdays, and night buses cover the rest of the week. Distances are large but transit is genuinely good, so meeting across the city is realistic rather than ambitious.

Summer is the peak by some distance — the city moves outdoors from May and stays there. December brings a second, smaller wave around the Christmas markets and company parties.

Frequently asked questions

Is a companion comfortable somewhere informal?

That is most of what Berlin asks for. A walk, a beer garden, a gallery afternoon or a neighbourhood dinner all work without being formal.

Can we meet outside the centre?

Yes. Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg and Charlottenburg are all easy to reach, and often more comfortable for a first meeting than Mitte.

How late can the evening run?

As late as you like at weekends — the U-Bahn and S-Bahn run all night on Fridays and Saturdays, with night buses the rest of the week.
