How the evening runs

Heat sets the timetable. Almost nothing outdoors is pleasant between eleven and four, so the day splits into an air-conditioned middle and an evening that opens up once the sun drops. Dinner runs from seven to nine, street kitchens serve well past midnight, and the rooftop bars on Sathorn and Silom fill early for the light rather than late for the music. Dress is light, but shoulders and knees are covered for any temple visit.

Getting around

Two rail systems do the heavy lifting — the elevated BTS and the underground MRT — and both stop around midnight. Above them the traffic is genuinely immobile at rush hour: a two-kilometre trip that takes eight minutes on the Skytrain can take forty in a car. The Chao Phraya express boats are a proper alternative along the river and reach Charoenkrung and the old town more reliably than the roads do. Motorbike taxis at the mouth of every soi solve the last kilometre.

When Bangkok is busiest

November to February is the cool dry window, and it is when the riverside and the rooftops are at their best. March to May is the hot season, with April touching forty degrees. The southwest monsoon runs roughly June to October: not constant rain but a heavy hour most afternoons, which floods some streets and clears. Songkran in mid-April takes over the city for several days — much of it closes and the rest is having a water fight.

Questions about Bangkok

Riverside or Skytrain — which side of the city works better?

The river is slower and much prettier, and Charoenkrung and the old town belong to it. Anything along the BTS line — Thonglor, Ari, Sathorn — is easier to reach and easier to leave. Trying to combine the two in one evening is what the traffic punishes.

What does the rainy season actually change?

The shape of the afternoon, not the plan. Downpours are heavy, localised and usually over within the hour, so anything with a roof carries on. What it does affect is the roads, which flood in places and slow everything behind them.

Is Songkran worth planning around?

Yes, in one direction or the other. For several days in mid-April the water fight is the city and ordinary plans do not survive it. Either build the days around it or leave a wide margin either side.
