How the evening runs
Porto is a working city that turns sociable in the evening rather than one that performs all day. Dinner is around eight, plainer and cheaper than Lisbon, and the north dresses a shade more conservatively than the south. Everything here is oriented to the river: the city climbs away from the Douro on both banks, and where you meet is mostly a question of how much of that climb you want.
Getting around
The metro is light rail rather than underground along most of its length, and its most useful stretch crosses the upper deck of the Dom Luís I bridge — the lower deck takes the road traffic, both decks take pedestrians, and the walk across is the best free view in the city. Historic trams still run, and line 1 along the river out to Foz do Douro is a service rather than a museum piece. What no map conveys is the gradient; the funicular beside the bridge exists for a reason.
When Porto is busiest
May to September is the reliable half of the year. The Atlantic makes Porto wetter than Lisbon and the rain settles in from November to March, which moves an evening indoors without emptying it. The date to know is São João, the night of the 23rd of June — the whole city is out until morning, and it is the one night of the year when nothing can be arranged quietly.

Questions about Porto
Does Vila Nova de Gaia belong in a Porto plan?
Usually. Gaia is the far bank of the Douro — a separate city on paper and five minutes on foot across the bridge — and the port lodges and the best view back at Porto are both over there. It suits an afternoon better than an evening, because the walk back is more pleasant in daylight.
How steep is Porto really?
Steep enough to plan around. The Ribeira sits at the water and the centre sits well above it, and the connection is stairs, a funicular or a long way round. Foz do Douro and Cedofeita are flatter, if a first meeting should not involve a climb.
