How the evening runs
Heat and sudden rain push the city indoors and late. Dinner lands around eight, and the mamak stalls — open-fronted, cheap and running all night — are where the evening keeps going afterwards without anyone deciding to make a night of it. Bangsar and Damansara Heights are residential and low-key; Bukit Bintang and KLCC are the bright, busy end. Dress is relaxed but covered shoulders are the safer choice outside the malls, and Friday afternoons are quiet while prayers finish.
Getting around
Three rail systems overlap without always connecting — LRT, MRT and the Monorail — all on one Touch 'n Go card, and the interchanges sometimes mean a walk above ground. An air-conditioned pedestrian bridge links Bukit Bintang to KLCC and is the difference between a pleasant ten minutes and an unpleasant one. Distances that look walkable often are not, because of the heat and the missing pavements, and e-hailing is cheap enough that most people simply use it.
When Kuala Lumpur is busiest
There is no dry season, only wetter months. March to April and September to November bring the heaviest afternoon storms, which arrive fast, last an hour and clear. Temperatures barely move all year. Haze drifts in during some late summers and is worth checking before planning anything outdoors. Ramadan fills the evening bazaars and shifts eating to after sunset; Chinese New Year and Deepavali both close a good number of businesses for a few days.

Questions about Kuala Lumpur
Does it really rain every day?
Most afternoons in the wetter months, but briefly. Storms build quickly, drop a great deal of water in an hour and stop. Almost everything social here already assumes it, which is why so much of the city is connected under cover.
Is Kuala Lumpur walkable?
In patches. Inside Bukit Bintang, KLCC and Bangsar, comfortably; between them, much less so — pavements stop without warning and the heat is unrelenting. The covered walkway between Bukit Bintang and KLCC is the one long stretch that works on foot.
What is a mamak and why does it keep coming up?
An open-air Indian-Muslim eatery, usually open around the clock, serving roti and teh tarik to anyone at any hour. It is the informal end of the evening here, and the reason plans can extend past midnight without any planning.
