How the evening runs

Marseille is the least formal city on this list and would take the suggestion that it should be otherwise as an insult. Dinner lands around eight, the Vieux-Port stays busy well past it, and nobody dresses to be looked at. The city runs north to south along its coast rather than out from a centre, so an evening tends to pick one stretch of it and stay there.

Getting around

Two metro lines and three tram routes cover the middle of the city, and the metro finishes earlier in the evening than Paris does, so a late night ends in a taxi. The centre walks well but is not flat. The thing no map conveys is how long Marseille is: the calanques at its southern edge are inside the city boundary and still the far side of an hour from the Vieux-Port.

When Marseille is busiest

The sea holds its warmth into late September, which makes early autumn better here than midsummer. July and August are hot and full. The other variable is the mistral, a dry northerly that can blow for three days at a stretch and leaves brilliant light and an unpleasant seafront behind it. Between June and September the calanques massif closes on days of high fire risk, and that call is published the evening before.

Questions about Marseille

Which part of Marseille works for a first afternoon?

Le Panier or the Cours Julien. Both are small, walkable and full of places to sit without committing to a meal. The Vieux-Port is the obvious place to meet and the least interesting place to stay — it is a landmark, not an afternoon.

Can we get out to the calanques?

Often, but not on demand. The massif is a national park at the southern edge of the city, reached by bus and then on foot, or by boat from the Vieux-Port. Access is restricted through the summer whenever the fire risk is high, so it is planned with an alternative behind it rather than fixed.
