How the evening runs
Lyon eats earlier than Paris — half past seven is normal, nine is late — and takes food more seriously than almost anywhere in France, as a matter of civic identity rather than fashion. Dress is neat and unshowy. The two rivers do the work an evening plan would otherwise need: the Rhône banks are laid out for walking and stay busy until late, while the Saône side is quieter and better for talking.
Getting around
Four metro lines cover the city and run until around midnight, and one of them, Line C, is a rack railway that hauls itself up the Croix-Rousse hill. Two funiculars climb out of Vieux Lyon, one of them to the basilica on the hill above it. Between them you never have to climb anything on foot unless you want to, and the flat middle — the Presqu'île, between the two rivers — walks from Terreaux to Perrache in about twenty-five minutes.
When Lyon is busiest
May to early October is the comfortable stretch. The valley holds heat in July and August and a good part of the city takes its holiday then. The exception is the Fête des Lumières in early December: four evenings when the buildings are lit and Lyon is genuinely full, and the one week in the year that fills long before anything else on the calendar.

Questions about Lyon
What is a bouchon, and does it suit a first meeting?
A bouchon is the traditional Lyonnais dining room — small, loud, generous and unapologetically rich. It makes a better second meeting than a first, because the tables are close enough that the room is part of the conversation. For a first evening the Presqu'île or the Rhône banks leave more space.
Are the traboules worth building an afternoon around?
They are, with one caveat. The traboules are covered passages cut through the buildings of Vieux Lyon and the Croix-Rousse, and many are open to the public — but they run through lived-in courtyards, so they are walked quietly and not every door is open on the day. It makes an unhurried couple of hours rather than a fixed route.
