Where to meet in Manila

  • Bonifacio Global City
  • Poblacion
  • Salcedo Village
  • Intramuros

How the evening runs

Traffic, not the clock, decides what is possible. Anything that crosses EDSA after five in the afternoon costs an hour, so evenings tend to stay inside one district — Bonifacio Global City or Makati — and start once people have already arrived there. Dinner is around seven, and Poblacion's bars run late in a way the business districts do not. Malls are not a fallback here but the ordinary social living room: air-conditioned, central and open until nine or ten.

Getting around

Each business district is comfortably walkable inside itself and unpleasant to leave. BGC and Makati are four kilometres apart and can be twenty minutes or ninety, depending entirely on the hour. Ride-hailing is the default; the elevated MRT and LRT lines are cheap and fast but crowded enough to be a poor choice for a first meeting. The Pasig River ferry is the one route immune to the roads, and it reaches Intramuros.

When Manila is busiest

December to February is cool, dry and the pleasant stretch of the year. March to May is hot. The rainy season runs June to November and overlaps the typhoons, which arrive with a few days of warning and can close offices and roads outright for a day or two. The Christmas season starts absurdly early — locals date it from September — and by November the malls and the traffic are both at their peak.

Questions about Manila

Is it realistic to cross the city for one evening?

Rarely, on a weekday. Four kilometres between Makati and BGC can take an hour and a half at the wrong time, and the return trip is worse. Picking one district and staying in it is how the city is actually lived in.

What makes Sunday different here?

The roads empty. Sunday morning is the one window when Intramuros, Rizal Park and the bay walk are reachable without budgeting an hour for the journey, and it is by far the best time to see the old walled city.

What does typhoon season mean in practice?

Between June and November a storm may arrive with two or three days of notice, and when it does the city stops for a day — offices close, roads flood, flights move. Outside those days the rain behaves like any tropical afternoon shower.
