How the evening runs
The evening begins once the commute has unwound, which is nearer eight than seven. Before that the main avenues are stationary and nobody is anywhere on time. Hotel lobbies and the cafes inside malls do the work that a neighbourhood bar does elsewhere — neutral, air-conditioned, easy to find and open late. Senopati and Kemang keep going after the malls close. Friday afternoons empty the offices early for prayers and fill the roads out of the city.
Getting around
The MRT runs north to south from Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI and is the only part of a journey with a predictable duration; TransJakarta's busways have their own lanes and cover far more ground. For anything short, an ojek — a motorbike booked through an app — will beat a car by a wide margin and is how most of the city moves. Odd-even licence plate restrictions apply on Sudirman and Thamrin on weekdays, which quietly rules out some car trips.
When Jakarta is busiest
The wet season runs November to April, when afternoon storms are heavy enough to flood low-lying streets and stall the traffic for hours. May to October is drier and much easier to plan around. Every Sunday morning Sudirman and Thamrin close to cars for Car Free Day and fill with people walking and cycling. Ramadan reshapes the day around the evening meal, and in the week of Lebaran a large part of the city leaves for home towns.

Questions about Jakarta
Why does everyone suggest meeting in a mall?
Because the pavements are difficult and the heat is constant, so the mall is where the city put its public space. Menteng and Senopati have proper street-level cafes, but a mall atrium is the reliable, easy-to-find middle ground and nobody reads it as unambitious.
Is the MRT useful for an evening out?
Along its one north-south corridor, very — Blok M, Senayan and Bundaran HI are all on it and it is far quicker than the surface. Anything off that line still means a car or an ojek, so it is worth checking before choosing where to meet.
What is Car Free Day?
On Sunday mornings the two main avenues close to traffic until around eleven, and central Jakarta becomes walkable in a way it never otherwise is. It is the easiest few hours of the week to spend outdoors here.
