How the evening runs

Eating is more or less continuous. Breakfast shops open at six, tea houses carry the afternoon, and the night markets — Raohe, Ningxia, Shilin — run from six until close to midnight. That makes the evening informal by default: people graze, walk and talk rather than book a table for three hours. Dress is casual even in Xinyi, tipping is not expected, and convenience stores are a legitimate place to sit down.

Getting around

The MRT is clean, cheap and signposted in English, runs until around midnight and takes the same EasyCard as the buses and the YouBike hire scheme. Covered arcades run along most older streets, which matters more than it sounds in a city this wet. Two things worth knowing: the Maokong gondola climbs to the tea houses above the city in twenty minutes, and the Elephant Mountain steps are a genuine twenty-minute climb rather than a stroll.

When Taipei is busiest

October to December is the best of it — cool, dry and clear. May and June bring the plum rains and weeks of grey damp. Summer is hot, humid and the typhoon window, with the worst of it between July and September; a typhoon day closes the city and is announced the night before. Winter is mild but persistently wet, which is when the Beitou hot springs, a short branch off the red line, stop being a novelty and start being the obvious plan.

Questions about Taipei

Are night markets a good place to actually talk?

For the first hour, yes — they are loud but easy, and sharing food removes the awkwardness of a table. Most people then walk out to a quieter tea house or a cafe nearby. Ningxia is calmer than Shilin if the crowds are the concern.

How much does the weather change what is possible?

More than in most cities on this list. Winter and spring are wet rather than cold, and the arcades and the MRT make that manageable; a summer typhoon does not, and shuts everything for the day with a night's warning.

Is the Elephant Mountain climb realistic for an evening?

It is twenty minutes of steep steps and a very good view of Taipei 101 at dusk. Worth it in cool weather and in shoes chosen for it; in August humidity it is a harder sell than it looks on the map.
