How the evening runs
Naples sits down late even by Italian standards — nine o'clock is an ordinary hour to eat, and nothing about the table is hurried afterwards. The city dresses well without dressing up: a good jacket is noticed, a dress code is not. Evenings gravitate to the seafront rather than to any one quarter, and the walk along it is usually the point rather than the connection between two other things.
Getting around
Naples has four funicular lines, three of which climb to Vomero, and they are the only sensible way up unless you want the stairs. Metro Line 1 is worth riding for itself — several of its stations were commissioned as artworks — but the metro and the funiculars both stop earlier than a long evening needs, so the last leg is a taxi. In the old centre nothing beats walking: the streets are narrow, the scooters are quick, and the traffic moves slower than you do.
When Naples is busiest
April to June and September to October are the settled months, warm enough for the seafront and clear enough to see across the bay. August is hot and the city half-empties in the middle of it, when neighbourhood places close for their own holidays. Winter is mild and wet, and the island crossings thin out — hydrofoils are cancelled outright when the sea gets up, which is worth knowing before a day is built around one.

Questions about Naples
Which part of Naples suits a first meeting?
Chiaia or the Lungomare. Both are level, open and easy to leave, and the seafront supplies a walk that needs no plan behind it. The historic centre is extraordinary and very dense — better once you already know each other a little.
Is a day outside the city realistic?
Yes, and it is a common request. Pompeii and the Sorrento coast are about an hour out on the Circumvesuviana, which is cheap and frequent and short on comfort at busy times; the islands go from the port and depend on the weather. Either works as a planned day rather than an afternoon idea.
How much lead time does Naples need?
A few days covers most dates. Spring and early-autumn weekends move faster than the rest of the year, and anything built around a crossing or a Pompeii trip is better settled early so the day is not assembled in a rush.
